glove trends for winter 2026: the eight looks to know

for most of the last sixty years gloves were something you bought when it turned cold and lost by february, having stopped being part of getting dressed in the mid-1960s¹. winter 2026 is different. the autumn/winter 2026 shows in february and march sent gloves out as a finishing touch rather than a necessity, the red carpets of 2025 and 2026 kept the opera glove in view, and search data shows growing interest in the longer, softer and brighter kinds. here are the eight glove trends that matter this winter, where each one came from, and how to wear it without looking like you’re in costume.

are gloves in fashion for winter 2026?

yes. luxury london’s autumn/winter 2026 trend report calls opera gloves the accessories story of the season, seen at michael kors, max mara, richard quinn, mugler, zimmermann and sportmax². writing for another in february, alexander fury credited miuccia prada and raf simons with reviving the opera glove for prada’s spring/summer 2026 collection, in duchesse satin or leather and a spectrum of colours, worn with everything from crinoline-skirted gabardine day dresses to cotton drill uniforms³, and instyle’s round-up of the autumn/winter 2026 shows gave gloves a trend of their own, noting that “any and all gloves will do the trick”, from a pop of colour to a funky pattern⁴.

the search data backs it up. according to google trends, which measures relative search interest, uk search interest in long leather gloves last winter, from november 2025 to january 2026, ran at roughly twice the level of the winter before, and search interest in suede gloves was about a fifth higher⁵. in the us, search interest in long leather gloves rose by around 40 percent over the same months⁶.

1. are opera gloves in style this winter?

yes. the opera glove, which by definition reaches beyond the elbow⁷, came out in force for autumn/winter 2026. michael kors marked his 45th anniversary with a show at the metropolitan opera in new york and put opera gloves into it⁸, and at richard quinn’s london show black velvet gloves were everywhere, paired with velvet bodices and floor-length skirts⁹. the length had been building since the spring collections: coveteur counted leather and satin opera gloves at prada, mesh at luar, silver sequined fingerless versions at simone rocha and white leather at balenciaga for spring/summer 2026¹⁰, and alexander fury noted copies of prada’s gloves cropping up in multiple collections the following season³.

on the red carpet the long glove kept appearing. anne hathaway wore matching opera-length valentino gloves with a black floral valentino gown at the oscars on 15 march 2026¹¹, rihanna wore leather opera gloves with a custom lavender balenciaga look at the gotham awards in new york on 1 december 2025¹², and anok yai wore black opera-length gloves with a custom balenciaga gown at the 2026 met gala¹³. our piece on celebrities in gloves has the key moments.

3. is fringe still in style?

yes, and it has grown up. the boho revival that marie claire traces to chloé’s autumn/winter 2024 show, under its new creative director chemena kamali, brought fringe back on isabel marant jackets and a ralph lauren duster¹⁸. for autumn/winter 2026 instyle picked out “cartoonish” fringe at chanel, loewe and rick owens⁴, and coveteur gave fringe a trend of its own, western in spirit¹⁹. even the 2026 met gala had fringe at the wrist, in the embroidered fringed cuffs sabrina carpenter wore with black stretch-tulle gloves and a custom dior gown²⁰.

suede is having a moment across the wardrobe. elle india called the suede trench the defining trend of 2026, pointing to suede coats at miu miu, saint laurent, khaite, the row and burberry²¹, and according to google trends, uk search interest in suede gloves was about a fifth higher last winter than the winter before⁵. suede’s brushed nap holds colour deeply and softens the edges of a strong print, which is why it’s the base of our 003 checkerboard gloves and both python styles. more in suede gloves.

5. is snake print in for winter 2026?

snake print had its moment last autumn, when marie claire uk called it “the real star of the show(s)” for autumn/winter 2025, seen at gabriela hearst, duran lantink, marni, zimmermann, valentino and chloé²². this season the animal prints have widened rather than faded. stylist micaela erlanger, speaking to the zoe report, describes animal print as “a warm, rich neutral” for fall 2026, and the zoe report names leopard and dark python, on the runways of saint laurent, carolina herrera and jacquemus, among the season’s biggest patterns, with dark python suggested as an accent on a structured bag or a kitten-heel pump²³. animal prints are also among the trends tagwalk lists for autumn/winter 2026 womenswear²⁴.

6. are polka dots still in?

dots are still here, now in high contrast. the zoe report’s fall 2026 print round-up favours high-contrast dots, micro or classic black and white, from balmain to carolina herrera²³, and richard quinn’s autumn/winter 2026 show included a polka-dot column dress⁹. on the red carpet, shakira wore black polka-dot lace gloves to the 2025 met gala, where priyanka chopra jonas paired black gloves with a balmain polka-dot suit²⁵, and at the 2026 met gala the artist amy sherald wore a polka-dot dress based on one of her own paintings, with long white gloves²⁶²⁷.

7. are checks and stripes in for winter?

you can. at the golden globes on 11 january 2026 odessa a’zion wore rings over her gloves and told vogue she always loves “a chunky ring over a glove”²⁹, dua lipa wore elbow-length sheer gloves set with gemstones to the 2025 met gala²⁵, and nss magazine noted rings worn over gloves, and bracelets securing a glove slipped into a coat sleeve, across social media³⁰. leather adds thickness, so a ring that fits snugly on a bare finger may be tight over a glove: cornelia james notes that rings may not fit properly over thicker materials such as leather³¹, and stylist suggests a chunky gold bangle, a pearl bracelet or a bold cuff layered over longline gloves³². more in rings over gloves.

the big change is that gloves are styled as a layer rather than pulled on at the door. nss magazine described designers and tastemakers making the glove “a standalone layering element”, and pointed to saint laurent’s autumn/winter 2025 men’s show, where slightly longer black leather gloves were set off by shirt cuffs rolled up over jacket sleeves³⁰. grazia suggested wearing long gloves over jacket sleeves, pushing the sleeves up and pulling the gloves to the elbow, or leaving the coat at home on warmer autumn days³³, and at mugler and givenchy, according to paris select book, gloves came with a jewelled cuff or draped over a bag handle³⁴. the glove becomes part of the outfit from the moment you get dressed, and it shows.

what are editors and street style wearing?

marie claire uk first spotted the leather glove trend taking hold towards the end of 2024, on the guests arriving at miu miu’s spring/summer 2025 show, who wore statement leather gloves with faux fur coats, suede jackets and sleeveless mini dresses, and then at copenhagen fashion week, where street stylers, influencers and industry insiders all wore them³⁵. by october 2025 grazia was calling long leather gloves the unexpected hero item of autumn/winter 2025, worn by editors and fashion insiders through fashion month even when it wasn’t cold, and by guests with sleeveless and cape tops³³, and sheerluxe pointed to influencers showing how to wear them in real life, tonal cream on cream or glossy black against oversized coats³⁶. the lesson from the street is that gloves look best when they’re worn as if they were always meant to be there, not as an afterthought against the cold.

what do the searches say about gloves this winter?

glove searches are intensely seasonal. according to google trends, uk search interest in leather gloves peaked in the second half of november 2025, the weeks around black friday, while us search interest peaked in the second week of december³⁷. the longer styles are rising: besides the near doubling in uk search interest in long leather gloves last winter⁵, long leather gloves for women are among the fastest-rising related searches for leather gloves on google trends in the uk over the past twelve months, and black leather gloves are the top related search³⁸.
