wutong吴

in shanghai, the plane trees that line the old french concession are called 梧桐, wutong. london’s streets are lined with plane trees too, and each leaf opens like a hand.

the name begins with 吴, wu, the family name behind the label, and the leaves fall just as it turns cold enough for gloves.

we make handmade gloves in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, in small runs of each colour, all in size 7.

不来也不去: leaves come and go, and the tree stays.

ten quiet pieces and a signature

an autumn capsule wardrobe for 2026 in ten neutral pieces, cut to combine freely, with one deliberate colour accent to give it character.

the short answer

an autumn capsule wardrobe for 2026 is ten neutral pieces in brown, grey and black: a long wool coat, a short leather jacket, a tailored jacket, a grey roll-neck, a cream knit, a poplin shirt, flannel trousers, a midi skirt, slim knee boots and black loafers, plus one colour accent kept small, ideally at the hands.

the most elegant wardrobes are rarely the largest. they belong to people who decided, at some point, what they look like, and then stopped arguing with themselves every morning. you notice it in how they dress for an ordinary tuesday in october: a camel coat, a grey knit, dark trousers, good shoes, and one thing in colour that seems to have been chosen for the pleasure of it.

that is the whole idea behind an autumn capsule wardrobe for 2026. ten pieces in a narrow palette of neutrals, cut well enough to wear in any combination, plus one deliberate accent. the neutrals do the work. the accent gives the work a signature.

a short history of owning less

the phrase is older than most people think. it appeared in american publications as early as the 1940s1 and was revived in the 1970s by susie faux, whose london boutique was called, with admirable directness, wardrobe. in 1985 donna karan made the idea famous with “7 easy pieces”, a collection of interchangeable workwear that opened with models in bodysuits and black tights before skirts, trousers and dresses were added on top.

karan’s insight still holds. a capsule works as a system, in which every piece is chosen for what it does to every other piece.

the palette comes first

choose two neutrals and a third that bridges them. for autumn 2026 the strongest base is brown and grey, with black as the anchor. brown has been the season’s quiet obsession, from cognac and copper suede boots at chloé, dior and twp, noted by marie claire2, to the black and dark brown suede and leather gloves max mara sent down its milan runway, which nowfashion3 described as “an austere study in tactile weight”. that phrase is a good brief for a capsule: dense wool, heavy suede, restraint.

camel is the alternative to brown if you run warm. navy works if you run cool. what matters is that every top works with every bottom, and that the coat goes over all of it.

an autumn capsule wardrobe 2026, in ten pieces

this is the one list worth keeping, and each piece has earned its place.

  1. a long wool coat in camel or chocolate, single-breasted, falling below the knee. the archetype is max mara’s 101801, designed in 1981 by anne-marie beretta4 and offered for decades in camel, oatmeal and black cashmere-wool, its cut never altered. yours need not be that coat, but it should share its confidence.
  2. a short leather jacket, black or deep brown, cut at the waist. it handles the warm afternoons in early october and sits under the long coat once november arrives.
  3. a tailored jacket with a defined waist. the zoe report5 saw peplum tailoring at the row, dior and givenchy in paris and declared it the “default jacket silhouette”. a subtle flare at the hip is enough.
  4. a grey cashmere or merino roll-neck. the most versatile top you will own.
  5. a cream knit with a round neck, slightly heavier, for weekends.
  6. a crisp poplin shirt in white or pale blue, to wear alone, under knits, or open over a vest.
  7. straight dark trousers in wool flannel, full length, breaking softly over the shoe.
  8. a bias-cut midi skirt in chocolate satin or wool crêpe. it moves, and it turns the roll-neck into evening.
  9. slim knee-high boots in brown suede or black leather. marie claire found “slim boots with stretchy constructions” at chanel, altuzarra and miu miu, and the narrow line disappears neatly under skirts and coats.
  10. black leather loafers, for everything else.

the one colour accent

ten neutral pieces can look severe. the eleventh decision, and the most personal, is where to put colour, and our advice is to put it in one place only and keep it small.

the best home for it is the hands. a coloured glove sits at the edge of the silhouette, appears and disappears as you move, and never has to coordinate with anything because there is nothing else in colour to clash with. a cobalt or emerald glove against a camel sleeve is vivid without being loud. under a chocolate coat, red reads as warmth rather than flash. the colour moves through the day with you: up to a coffee cup, down to a bag strap, into a pocket.

this is where a pair like wutong’s plum python-print suede gloves earns its place in a capsule. one deep colour, worn daily, gives ten quiet pieces a point of view.

if you would rather not wear colour at the hand, put the accent at the throat with a silk square, or at the ankle with a coloured sock beneath the loafer, which w magazine spotted at marni in burnt orange6. just do not do all three. a capsule with several accents is just a wardrobe.

how the pieces combine

a good capsule is measured in outfits. a few that this one gives you:

for the office, the peplum jacket over the grey roll-neck with flannel trousers and loafers. the long coat on top, coloured gloves at the cuff.

for a saturday, the leather jacket over the cream knit, flannel trousers and brown suede boots. if it is cold, the long coat goes over the leather; two layers of outerwear look deliberate when the lengths are this different.

for dinner, the satin skirt with the grey roll-neck tucked in, slim boots, and the coat worn over the shoulders. the gloves stay on until you sit.

for a weekend away, pack everything except the tailored jacket. the poplin shirt under the cream knit, collar out, with the skirt, looks like a choice rather than a compromise.

what to leave out

no prints in the core ten. a print is memorable, which is exactly why it cannot be worn three times a week. no trainers unless you genuinely live in them; a capsule built around loafers and boots has a different posture. and no second coat. the discipline of one coat is what forces the pieces underneath to agree with each other.

wutong makes handmade leather gloves in plum, brown, cream and black, including a signature black fringed pair, for exactly this kind of edited wardrobe. browse the nappa gloves; they make a thoughtful gift for someone who already knows what they like.

quick answers

how many pieces should an autumn capsule wardrobe have?
between ten and fifteen, not counting underwear, sleepwear or sportswear. ten is enough if every piece works with every other; go beyond fifteen and you are back to deciding every morning.
which colour accent works best with brown and grey?
cobalt, emerald and red all sing against brown and grey, because they are clear and saturated where the neutrals are soft. pick the one you already reach for and keep it to a single accessory.
can a capsule wardrobe include a trend piece?
one, if it fits the palette. a peplum jacket in chocolate wool is a trend that will still look considered next year. a trend in an off-palette colour will sit unworn.
