wutong吴

in shanghai, the plane trees that line the old french concession are called 梧桐, wutong. london’s streets are lined with plane trees too, and each leaf opens like a hand.

the name begins with 吴, wu, the family name behind the label, and the leaves fall just as it turns cold enough for gloves.

we make handmade gloves in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, in small runs of each colour, all in size 7.

不来也不去: leaves come and go, and the tree stays.

let the cuff decide

the winter coat trends of 2026, from camel overcoats and capes to faux fur and velvet, each matched with the glove its sleeve asks for.

the short answer

the winter coat trends of 2026 are the long camel overcoat, the cape, belted faux fur, the navy pea coat, the shearling flight jacket and black velvet. match the glove to the sleeve: long gloves under capes and cropped jackets, short smooth leather with fur, and a bright glove against navy.

a coat is the one thing most people will see you in from november to march, and its sleeve is where the outfit either ends cleanly or trails off. designers seemed to know this for autumn/winter 2026. sleeves were cropped, removed or furred, and at show after show the hand that came out of them was gloved.

the winter coat trends 2026 put forward are broader than usual: the long camel overcoat, the cape, belted faux fur, the pea coat, the shearling flight jacket and black velvet. each has a different sleeve, and each wants a different glove. choose the coat first, then let its cuff tell you how long, how bright and how plain the glove should be.

the long camel overcoat

max mara’s coat has been the house’s argument for decades. the 101801, designed by anne-marie beretta, has been made to the same cut and proportions since 19811, and for aw26 ian griffiths again placed the coat at the core2 of the collection, in brushed cashmere, thick wool and supple leather. nowfashion’s look notes3 describe heavy camel overcoats with wide notched lapels and dropped shoulders, and taupe coats in wool and suede, often finished with elbow-length or longer gloves in dark suede or leather.

that pairing is the lesson. a camel coat is warm in colour and soft in texture, so the glove should be darker and smoother. chocolate or black leather, pushed up under the sleeve, gives the long column a firm edge at the hand. if you prefer colour, choose something deep enough to hold its own against camel: oxblood, bottle green, a dark plum.

the cape and the cropped sleeve

the cape is back, and it changes the glove question entirely. net-a-porter’s aw26 trend guide4 points to chloé under chemena kamali, and at khaite a beige wool stand-collar cape-dress appeared alongside opera gloves worn well past the elbow, according to nowfashion5.

a cape leaves the forearm exposed every time you lift a hand, so short gloves look unfinished beneath it. go long, and match the glove to the cape or the boot rather than to a bag. tan leather under a camel cape, black under black. the arm then reads as one continuous line, and the cape’s movement has something still to fall against.

belted faux fur

instyle’s fashion-month round-up6 described the season’s faux furs as “belted, dramatic, and buttoned-up”, coats that “evoke the glamour of a bygone era”. the impression found7 vintage styles at valentino and balenciaga and “monster fur textures” at etro and givenchy, while burberry showed tartan coats trimmed in fur, according to coveteur8. the snow-leopard print, seen at bottega veneta, carolina herrera and tom ford, was the season’s most persuasive version.

with this much texture, the glove has to be the opposite: short, smooth and glossy. a wrist-length glove in polished black leather is the sharpest choice, because a fur cuff will swallow anything longer. skip fur-trimmed gloves entirely. under a pale coat, a single strong colour at the hand, scarlet or cobalt, stops the look from turning into a costume.

the pea coat and the sailor

the nautical coat was instyle’s other outerwear story, at etro, ferragamo and dries van noten. it is also the most practical trend of the season, because the version worth owning is the classic one: a short, double-breasted navy coat in dense wool, with a collar that turns up and metal buttons.

it is also the easiest coat for colour. navy has a crisp, almost graphic quality that sets off a bright glove better than black does. a red glove against navy is the classic; a yellow or a soft blue is more unexpected. keep the glove at wrist length so it meets the coat’s narrow cuff neatly, and let the buttons be the only metal.

the shearling flight jacket

in paris, the zoe report noted9 shearling-lined flight jackets at balmain and dior, worn with collars up. the same report flagged jackets with furry sleeves at schiaparelli, nina ricci and marine serre.

cropped jackets cut the body at the waist, which makes them a gift for long gloves: a glove that reaches the forearm balances the short length and looks deliberate rather than chilly. if the shearling cuff is bulky, wear the glove over it rather than under. a sleek leather glove against a shaggy cuff is one of the more satisfying contrasts winter has to offer.

black velvet

velvet was everywhere in tailoring this season, from calvin klein collection to alaïa, and at khaite it became outerwear: a black velvet double-breasted coat closing high at the neck and falling past the knee. velvet absorbs light and glows only at its edges, so it wants a glove that catches what little light there is. glossy black leather does this beautifully. black fringed leather does it better, because the fringe moves while the velvet stays still.

the slicker deserves a final word. instyle counted sleek raincoats at lacoste, loewe and tod’s, and prada layered a short yellow waterproof cape over a coat, according to fashionunited10. the glossy surface of a slicker and the glow of leather are natural partners, and a coloured glove is the easiest way to make a practical coat look chosen.

wutong makes handmade leather gloves, from plum and brown python-print suede to a black fringed pair made for dark winter coats. find the fringed pairs among the fringe gloves; they also make a thoughtful gift for whoever is buying a new coat this winter.

quick answers

what is the biggest coat trend for winter 2026?
the long wool overcoat, shown in camel and taupe at max mara, remains the coat most worth buying. belted faux fur, capes and short pea coats were the newer stories on the aw26 runways.
what gloves go with a cape?
long ones. a cape exposes the forearm whenever you move, so an elbow-length or opera glove keeps the arm covered and turns it into a single line.
can i wear colourful gloves with a fur coat?
yes, if the coat is plain in colour. a single bright, smooth leather glove against a pale or neutral faux fur looks sharp; against a printed fur, black is safer.
