wutong吴

in shanghai, the plane trees that line the old french concession are called 梧桐, wutong. london’s streets are lined with plane trees too, and each leaf opens like a hand.

the name begins with 吴, wu, the family name behind the label, and the leaves fall just as it turns cold enough for gloves.

we make handmade gloves in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, in small runs of each colour, all in size 7.

不来也不去, neither coming nor going: the leaves fall, and the tree stays.

every order ships tracked from the uk (in-stock pairs the next business day, late-shipping styles 14 days after you order), delivery is free to the uk and eu (£15 to the rest of the world), and you can return your order within 14 days of delivery.

gifts for someone who is always cold, starting with her hands

she's the one with her hands up her sleeves at the bus stop. start there.

the short answer

start with her hands, because they're the first thing to go cold and the hardest to keep warm. leather blocks wind far better than knit, and a close fit keeps the warm air in. the 001 fringe gloves from wutong studio have a touchscreen tip, so she won't take them off to use her phone. £84, size 7.

001 fringe gloves, black nappa leather with a deep black fringe and a touchscreen index finger, handmade, size 7

why start with gloves?

hands lose heat quickly, and someone who feels the cold usually feels it in their fingers first. a blanket or a hot water bottle helps at home. gloves help on the walk to work, at the bus stop and on the platform, which is where she's coldest.

are leather gloves warm?

leather blocks wind far better than knit, so on a windy day a fitted leather glove usually feels warmer than a thicker woollen one. a close fit matters too: it keeps a thin layer of warm air against the skin. our gloves are fashion gloves rather than ski gloves, so for very cold days she can tuck the cuff under her coat sleeve to close the gap at the wrist. there's more in what to wear when it's cold and windy.

why does a touchscreen tip help?

people who feel the cold often take their gloves off every time they check their phone, and then don't put them back on. the 001 fringe gloves have a touchscreen tip on the index finger, so she can reply to a message, tap a card or check a map without taking them off. read how touchscreen leather gloves work for what to expect.

which other pairs work?

for a camel or brown coat: the 006 brown python-print gloves, soft brown suede.

for a black coat with one bright note: the 008 knotted fringe gloves, black nappa with a black, tan and cream fringe.

only the 001 has the touchscreen tip, so if she's always on her phone, choose that one.

what about size?

every style is size 7, a small-to-medium hand. a snug fit is warmer than a loose one, and nappa softens to the hand over the first few weeks. if you can, measure a glove she already wears against our size guide.

how do you give it?

tick ‘this is a gift’ at checkout and write a note, which we handwrite on a card in the box. there's no price in the parcel, and the receipt comes to you. delivery is free to the uk and the eu, and £15 to the rest of the world, tracked.
