in shanghai, the plane trees that line the old french concession are called 梧桐, wutong. london’s streets are lined with plane trees too, and each leaf opens like a hand.

the name begins with 吴, wu, the family name behind the label, and the leaves fall just as it turns cold enough for gloves.

we make handmade gloves in nappa leather, suede and calf hair, in small runs of each colour, all in size 7.

不来也不去: leaves come and go, and the tree stays.

undone bags and boots that cling

the fall 2026 accessories trends worth keeping, from open bags and clinging boots to gloves at every length, read with a stylist’s eye.

published , by wutong studio, 6 minute read

the short answer

the fall 2026 accessories trends are tactile and a little undone: bags carried open, small hard minaudières and clutches, croc-embossed skins, studs and faux fur, slim second-skin boots, gloves at every length, from max mara’s long suede to short colourful pairs, and heavier jewellery. buy for touch: one softened bag, one slim boot, one pair of gloves.

black nappa gloves with a long black fringe, worn with a black leather coat and holding a leopard-spotted clutch

at khaite in february, a model came out in one black leather glove and one in python print, both pulled well past the elbow. it was a small decision, easy to miss in a long show gallery, and it said more about the season than any coat. the pair did not match, and it was not supposed to. nowfashion’s look-by-look notes1 record it plainly, “mismatched opera gloves in solid black and python print”, alongside opera gloves in “stark tan” and “glossy black”.

that glove is a good way into the fall 2026 accessories trends, because it captures what the best of them share. the season’s accessories are tactile and a little undone, and they are meant to be handled. bags hang open. boots cling. gloves climb the arm. jewellery gets heavy again. very little of it is about logos, and almost all of it rewards a closer look.

what follows is a reading of the reports that matter.

the open bag

the bag story of the season is a mood more than a shape: bags carried as if someone had just reached in for their keys. purseblog’s runway round-up2 called it “coming undone”, with chanel showing classic flaps worn open and balenciaga softening the hourglass into the semi-structured hg avenue. who what wear named the same idea “the great unzipped”3 and listed altuzarra, loewe and fendi among its exponents, while coveteur4 singled out loewe’s amazona and the exposed duffles at louis vuitton.

the appeal is about posture. a bag held shut reads as guarded; one carried open, the leather slumping a little against the hip, reads as ease. it is also a test of the leather itself. only a supple hide looks good falling open. a stiff one gapes.

wear it the way the runways did, tucked under the arm against a long wool coat, flap loose. keep the contents tidy, since the whole point is that people can see in.

small, hard and precious

at the other end of the scale, evening bags shrank and set. w magazine’s accessories report5 traced the return of the minaudière, the jewel-box bag held in the palm, in jonathan anderson’s dior and demna’s gucci. purseblog found the clutch winning over the soft pouch at celine, coach, bottega veneta and hermès, often long and east-west or built on a frame. khaite showed “structured crocodile-embossed clutches”.

a clutch changes how you stand. one hand is always occupied, so the other becomes expressive, and both are on show all evening. this is where gloves and bags start working together: a hard, glossy clutch against a soft leather glove is the most satisfying texture contrast of the season.

skins, studs and fur

three surface trends ran across almost every show. embossed and exotic-look skins appeared at chanel, where croc was pressed into matthieu blazy’s maxi flap, and at prada, dior, celine and schiaparelli, according to purseblog. studs returned at hermès, on the straps of mini versions of its icons, and at miu miu, chloé and valentino. and fur, mostly faux, wrapped bags at fendi, chanel, bottega veneta and simone rocha; who what wear’s verdict was that “there must be no scrimping on the fluff”.

choose one. a croc-embossed bag with studded straps and a shearling trim is three trends fighting for the same few square inches. the skin is the one with the longest life, because a deep brown croc emboss reads as a texture before it reads as a season.

boots that cling, and boots that slump

marie claire’s fall 2026 boot report6 identified two opposing silhouettes. at chanel, altuzarra and miu miu, “slim boots with stretchy constructions took center stage”, the boot as second skin. at balenciaga, ganni and stella mccartney, boots were made with “intentionally gathered” fabric that slouches. between them sat brown suede at chloé, dior and twp, in “fresh shades of cognac and copper”.

porter’s fw26 trend report7 leaned towards the narrow line, with over-the-knee boots at tom ford and toteme, and max mara put “over-the-knee suede boots” under almost every look, per nowfashion8.

the second-skin boot is the more useful of the two. it disappears under a midi skirt and lengthens the leg beneath a long coat, and it leaves the eye free for the hands and the bag.

gloves, at every length

gloves were everywhere, and in two registers. on the runway they went long. porter declared that “gloves need to be at least elbow length”, noting that max mara styled its entire show with long suede gloves, and that sportmax, balenciaga, ralph lauren and khaite finished looks with them too. max mara’s were “cut from dark suede or smooth leather” in black and brown. at carven, nowfashion noted leather gloves finished in long fringe9.

the commercial register is shorter and more colourful. who what wear’s five biggest accessories trends10, syndicated by yahoo, called leather gloves “an outfit essential come fall 2026” and recommended “sleek, wrist-length leather gloves in a versatile neutral such as cream”. instyle’s fashion-month round-up, republished by aol11, went the other way and championed bright or patterned gloves as the finishing touch, citing anna sui for matching gloves to trousers.

our position: start short and saturated. a wrist-length glove in a strong colour does the same work as a long one at a fraction of the commitment, and it can be worn every day from now until march. wutong’s wrist-length pairs sit squarely in this lane: the plum python-print suede gloves for colour, and the knotted fringe gloves, which pick up the carven idea for those who want movement rather than colour.

weight at the ear, wool at the neck

jewellery got heavier. w magazine reported earrings and heavy necklaces layered together at dries van noten, louis vuitton and saint laurent; instyle noted oversized gold at saint laurent, celine and chanel. khaite pinned “fabric flower brooches in bright yellow, orange, and red” to velvet lapels, which coveteur folded into a wider return of oversized pins alongside simone rocha’s rosettes.

knitwear moved into accessories, too. w magazine counted beanies at chloé and bottega veneta, scarves wrapped at the neck or waist at celine and loewe, and structured hats from phoebe philo’s caps to a leather bucket hat at michael kors. colour arrived at the ankle: pea-green stockings at moschino, burnt-orange socks at marni.

how to edit it down

buy for touch rather than for any single item: one softened bag, one slim boot, one pair of gloves in a colour you would never choose for a coat.

wutong makes handmade leather gloves in plum, brown and cream as well as its signature black fringed pair, for anyone who wants the season’s most expressive accessory in its most wearable form. start with the fringe gloves.

quick answers

what is the single most useful accessory trend for fall 2026?
gloves. they appeared in both the runway reports and the commercial forecasts, they suit every coat, and a short pair in a strong colour will outlast most of the season’s novelties.
are open bags practical?
more than they look. carry one under the arm with the opening against your body, and choose a bag with an interior zip pocket for keys and cards.
is it worth buying long opera gloves for day?
if you wear short-sleeved knits or dresses with bare arms, yes. under a coat sleeve they bunch, so for daytime with a coat, a wrist-length glove is the better buy.
